[BHE 618] Book Hunting in Bodo, Summer Book Club Titles, and Other Book Finds

Bodø Book Hunting!

Myra here.

A few weeks ago, I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to return to Norway – this time to present at an international conference in Bodø, – which I hope to write about eventually in a separate post.

My previous two visits in Norway was in Bergen in 2016 (see my book hunting post here) and in 2017 also in Bergen with my childhood friend and her Norwegian husband hosting me and my family on both occasions (see my book hunting post here).

Seven years later, my book hunting in Norway has taken me to two bookstores in Bodø – both are situated in the mall that is next door to our hotel, making everything super convenient. I managed to purchase quite a few titles as you can see below.

Book Hunting in Bodø, Norway

Norli Bookstore, Clas Ohlson, Storgata 5, 8006 Bodø, Norway

When in Norway, I make sure I hunt for books published by my favourite husband-and-wife tandem Gro Dahle and Svein Nyhus – and their daughter, Kaia Dahle Nyhus. I also try to find titles by other favourites such as Stian Hole for example. I was in luck!

(01) Du Og Jeg by Synne Lea and Stian Hole (Amazon)

(02) Ollianna by Gro Dahle and Kaia Dahle Nyhus

Naturally, I had to visit the other bookstore in the same mall to see what their titles are. This time, I managed to take some photos of their English-title collection.

Ark Bookstore, Clas Ohlson, Storgata 5, 8006 Bodø, Norway

Here are some of my book finds:

(03) Steder Åtisse by Svein Nyhus

(04) Dagen by Gro Dahle and Kaia Dahle Nyhus

I mistakenly thought that I could avail of the buy two books and get the second book at 50% off – apparently, it was only for members. At any rate, I thought I might as well get this book while deciding to not purchase the other title I had on hand which was Hunger by Knut Hamsen (Amazon) – since I did not enjoy reading Pan (Amazon) all that much, anyway.

(05) The Five: The Untold Lives Of The Women Killed By Jack The Ripper by Hallie Rubenhold (Amazon)

I was very fortunate to snag another copy of this multi-award-winning and highly controversial picturebook – but I shall leave the story of its providence in another post.

(06) Sinna Mann by Gro Dahle and Svein Nyhus

More Book Club Titles

These two are for my GatheringReaders book club in my college/university. The book on the left is our book club title for May, and the one on the right is our book selection for June.

(07) Lost by Veronica Raimo translated by Leah Janeczko (Amazon)

(08) Undiscovered by Gabriela Wiener and translated by Julia Sanches (Amazon)

Now these two books are selected by my online book club, #CampLitsy24 for the month of June. I do have my reading cut out for me this summer.

(09) Clear by Carys Davies (Amazon)

(10) Butter by Asako Yuzuki translated by Polly Barton (Amazon)

The book on the left is one of the two books we need to read for July, while the book on the right is one of the books we need to read for August – both for #CampLitsy24. I am still waiting for two more titles to be delivered (one is arriving on 26 June, while the other is still under process).

(11) James by Percival Everett (Amazon)

(12) The Alternatives by Caoilinn Hughes (Amazon)

The book on the left was supposed to be our June read for another one of my book clubs, the Emirates Literature Foundation book club – but the organizers have replaced it with a nonfiction title that I have no plan of reading, thankyouverymuch, since I was really excited to read and discuss this novel which I already purchased based on their earlier announcement. The book on the right is our #EuropaCollective book club pick for June – another online book club on Litsy, in addition to my #CampLitsy24 one. I do have FIVE book clubs after all, this summer. Whew.

(13) Enter Ghost by Isabella Hammad (Amazon)

(14) The Road To Dalton by Shannon Bowring (Amazon)

The book on the left is for my book club of two with our child who is coming home for the Summer (yay!), while the book on the right deserves an entire post on its own which I am planning on sharing very soon.

(15) Just Kids: The Illustrated Edition by Patti Smith (Amazon)

(16) Stories Of A Bitter Country by Ninotchka Rosca

I follow Literary Hub on Facebook. When I found out that Fady Joudah, a Palestinian American poet, has won the Jackson Poetry Prize this year (see LitHub’s post here), I scoured online for his books and found these two:

(17) Footnotes In The Order Of Disappearance: Poems by Fady Joudah (Amazon)

(18) Tethered To Stars: Poems by Fady Joudah (Amazon)

The book on the left is a present given by the author who happens to be my good friend whom I met while living in Singapore, the book on the right is a recent book purchase from Magrudy’s.

(19) Lost Words: An Armenian Story Of Survival And Hope by Leila Boukarim and Sona Avedikian (Amazon)

(20) Aisha’s Pearl by Julia Johnson and Maitha Al Khayat

Book Presents

One of our brilliant PhD Candidates, Najla AlOwais, who contributes posts here on GatheringBooks on occasion (see her guest post here and here), spoils me with books whenever we see each other. Here are some of the books she gifted me with:

(21) Telling Stories Wrong by Gianni Rodari and Beatrice Alemagna (Amazon)

(22) Touch by Adania Shibli (Amazon)

(23) Noura by Sheikha Al-Ghattam and Sasha Haddad (if my Translate Photo app is correct, that is).

How about you? Any recent e-book finds?
