Comics that celebrate friendship.

SaturdayReads

Fats here.

Every Saturday we hope to share with you our thoughts on reading and books. We thought that it would be good practice to reflect on our reading lives and our thoughts about reading in general. While on occasion, we would feature a few books in keeping with this, there would be a few posts where we will just write about our thoughts on read-alouds, libraries, reading journals, upcoming literary conferences, books that we are excited about, and just book love miscellany in general.

sr0525aAdventure Time: Marceline and the Scream Queens by Meredith Gran

Publisher: KaBOOM (2013)
ISBN-13: 9781608863136

I enjoyed the few episodes of Adventure Time that I watched years ago. I even bought a copy of Adventure Time: Eye Candy Volume 1. Adventure Time: Marceline and the Scream Queens is the first Adventure Time comics I’ve read. The story follows Princess Bubblegum who joins Marceline’s rock band on a tour and acts as their band manager. Marceline is confident that her band is taking the Land of Ooo by storm. Her confidence is put to test when she comes across negative reviews about her band. As band manager, what would Princess Bubblegum do? Find out how the tour ends for the vampire queen and her paranormal rock band.

sr0525bGotham Academy Volume 1: Welcome to Gotham Academy by Becky Cloonan

Publisher: DC
ISBN-13: 9781401254728

Although I’m more of a Marvel fan, Batman is one of my favorite superheroes. I was excited to learn about Gotham Academy, thanks to the power of the Internet. Gotham Academy is considered as the most prestigious school in Gotham City. One of its students, Olive Silverlock, got involved in a mysterious incident over the summer. Olive is back at school, with no memory of what happened and a new student to take under her wing. To make matters worse, there are rumors of a ghost haunting the school grounds. With the help of the new student and a few others, Olive Silverlock forms the Detective Club. Together, they decide to investigate and get to the bottom of the mystery.

sr0525cKim & Kim Volume 1: The Glamorous, High-Flying Rock Star Life by Magdalene Visaggio

Publisher: Black Mask Studios (2016)
ISBN-13: 9781628751604

Meet the Fighting Kims, Kim Quatro and Kim Dantzler. They are best friends who work as interdimensional bounty hunters. When the Fighting Kims learn about the highest bounty the could get their hands on, they join a wild goose chase across dimensions as they try to track down a shape-shifting octopus who goes by the name of Tom Quilt and a mysterious woman known only as Lady Babylon. Will the Fighting Kims finally get the reward that they deserve? This comics has been described as a rollicking queer as f**k action throwdown that’s equal parts Cowboy Bebop and Broad City.
