Book Hunting Expeditions Buffet of Asian Literature - Makan! Reading Themes

[BHE 105] Launch of May-June Reading Theme: Makan! Let’s Eat! Kain Tayo! Buffet of Asian Literature

BHE

Myra here.

As we just celebrated our 100th Book Hunting Expedition Sundays, we are inviting you, our fellow book hunters to share with us photographs of your favorite bookstores (be it indie, discounted book stores, book cafes, big retail bookshops) and a few of your amazing book finds. While we try as much as we can to find out-of-the-way bookstores in the many cities that we get to visit, we know that we won’t be able to discover so many faraway places in our lifetime. And so we welcome guest posts from anyone who would wish to share their latest bookplace discoveries. Even library finds and pictures of your libraries would be most welcome. Please send your BHE post to gatheringbooks (at) yahoo (dot) com.

Launch of New Reading Theme: Buffet of Asian Literature

Today is also a special day as we are launching our new reading theme from May-June: “Makan! Let’s Eat! Kain Tayo! A Buffet of Asian Literature.” As most of you may know, our May-June themes are usually connected to the Asian Festival of Children’s Content here in Singapore. Since we are having a foodie theme in AFCC this year, we thought it best to highlight that as well on our blog.

Special thanks to Iphigene for creating this gorgeous widget.

Essentially, we are looking for the following books:

  1. Books with food on them – it doesn’t have to be found on the cover, it doesn’t have to be the main theme, so long as it plays a significant part in the narrative, we are all for it. This means picnics, parties, lunch, dinner, chocolates, fruits and vegetables – from all around the world, not just from Asia.
  2. Stories about chefs, cooking, baking, wine-tasting, cheese (because I love cheese), nachos, and other native delicacies from the world over – doesn’t have to be just from Asia.
  3. ANYTHING in connection to Asian Literature (not just about food) – it’s a smorgasbord of Asian Lit fest! And we’re not just talking about picturebooks and young adult fiction – we also welcome poetry, adult novels, nonfiction – anything remotely connected to Asian literary culture, artwork, and sensibilities.

Since Middle East is still part of Asia, we’re also including books from this part of the world. Although we’re hoping that we can have a dedicated Middle East theme sometime soon. Golden Domes and Silver Lanterns: A Muslim Book of Colors by Hena Kahn and illustrated by Mehrdokht Amini.

  1. Golden Domes and Silver Lanterns is one of our favourites! There’s a lot in there we haven’t read yet, though – will have to keep a lookout next time we’re at the library.

  2. I just bought “Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs cookbook” for my granddaughter, Myra. It’s has recipes that she can follow, and she and her mom have made several of the recipes. Also, there are three books by Jorge Arguelta that are bi-lingual (English – Spanish) about food: one is Guacamole. What a great theme. I’ll keep looking!

  3. OOOH!!! I’m having love/hate thoughts about this theme. I love food, but I hate that it’ll make me hungry… 😉
