Old and New Books Revisited

Just when I thought I would not be able to find bargain books around the city, I got lucky these past few days and was able to hoard new goodies! Although I love my membership perks at Borders and Barnes & Noble, I still think that nothing compares to owning good books bought at good prices.

The 2 books on the top were bought at a thrift store at Horton Plaza, located in downtown San Diego. I didn’t think I’d find a bargain book shop in a downtown mall (and, sadly, I forgot the name of the store). The funny thing was I found the bookstore right before I was about to leave. Lucky find, I say.  Klutz by Henrik Drescher and The North Star by Peter Reynolds were both tagged $5, which was how much most of the picture books in that store cost. The price wasn’t bad since picture books cost somewhere between $14-$20. The book at the bottom, The Clock Without a Face by Scott Teplin, was an original purchase from Barnes & Noble and cost $19.95! (Yes, I go crazy with my purchases sometimes.) I’ve read all three and I really enjoyed The Clock Without a Face. I have to ponder about writing separate features for these since I have a lot of pending reviews for GB.

I also bought Sun & Spoon by Kevin Henkes (bottom left)  from the same downtown thrift store, and that was marked $2.50. I wanted to buy moooore books, but I didn’t bring enough money so I’ll come back another day. The other three books (Lucy’s E-Journal by Jane Harrington, The Dolhouse Murders by Betty Ren Wright, and Newbery Honor Book Because of Winn-Dixie by Kate DiCamillo) were bought at Kobey’s swap meet for 50 cents each!! Totally awesome price. I haven’t started in any of these books. Lucy’s is pending for review this month, while Dollhouse will be featured in November.

I bought these books (left) out of my sheer fascination for pigs. I didn’t realize how many times the classic story of The Three Little Pigs were retold until I browsed Barnes & Noble online. The different versions were so overwhelming I was tempted to collect all of them! Of the three, I have only read The Three Horrid Little Pigs by Liz Pichon, which I bought at Borders for $7.95. The story is somewhat similar to The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig by Eugene Trivizas (not in picture). I have yet to read The Three Little Javelinas by Susan Lowell and The Trial of the Big Bad Wolf by Liam Farrell. I bought the Javelinas at a Goodwill thrift store for $1.99, while Trial was purchased at Barnes & Noble online for $3.99.

The first two books (right) were two of my adult book purchases for this month. The Memory Keeper’s Daughter by Kim Edwards was bought at Kobey’s swap meet for 50 cents, while Riding the Bus with My Sister by Rachel Simon (a real-life story) was bought at Goodwill for 50 cents. I had been eyeing Memory Keeper’s for months now but never had the chance to buy it. Riding the Bus is the interesting story of a woman with mental retardation. The book in the right, The Cabinet of Wonders (Book I of the Kronos Chronicles) by Marie Rutkoski, was on sale at Costco for $4.95. I loved the cover and the plot, so I’m really excited to read this book. Hopefully, I get to collect the rest of the series.

This last set of books written by Nick Bantock is my “best and most awesome” purchase of the week. The story of Griffin and Sabine, told through a series of postcards, is a timeless classic. The cover, artworks, and story layout are enchantingly beautiful for the visual reader. Although I am missing the third book, The Golden Mean, I am excited to rediscover the story of Griffin & Sabine and write a feature for our February special next year. Griffin & Sabine, Sabine’s Notebook, and The Gryphon were bought at Goodwill for a really, really, really good price of $1.99 each. These are originally sold for $19.95 each or $45 for the trilogy box set.
