[Book Quote Tuesday] How Are You Forged By Reading?

... or what it means to embrace the power of a literate life.

Myra here.

It is that time of the week again where we share a book quote that seemed particularly striking for us.

Our book quote theme from here on onwards will be about BOOKS and READING.

Among the books I would unfailingly recommend to teachers and librarians whenever I am invited to do workshops, professional development training, or any speaking engagement related to reading is Forged By Reading: The Power Of A Literate Life by Kylene Beers and Robert Probst (Amazon). The above quote is one that is included in my slide deck as my rationale for diversifying (and decolonizing) school and home libraries, and classroom bookshelves. Imagine the poverty of consciousness among people who only read within their comfort zones with ways of thinking that are stringently identical to their own.

What are your go-to professional development texts on reading?

Myra is a Teacher Educator and a registered clinical psychologist based in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates. Prior to moving to the Middle East, she lived for eleven years in Singapore serving as a teacher educator. She has edited five books on rediscovering children’s literature in Asia (with a focus on the Philippines, Malaysia, India, China, Japan) as part of the proceedings for the Asian Festival of Children’s Content where she served as the Chair of the Programme Committee for the Asian Children’s Writers and Illustrators Conference from 2011 until 2019. While she is an academic by day, she is a closet poet and a book hunter at heart. When she is not reading or writing about books or planning her next reads, she is hoping desperately to smash that shuttlecock to smithereens because Badminton Is Life (still looking for badminton courts here at UAE - suggestions are most welcome).
