[Book Quote Tuesday] “But you can’t make people listen…”

... until they watch their world blow up around them.

Myra here.

It is that time of the week again where we share a book quote that seemed particularly striking for us.

For the month of April, our book quote theme is: TRUTH.

The Philippine election is coming up in a month (yes, I am a registered voter), and so I thought of devoting the entire month to TRUTH, especially since fabrications, deceptions, manufactured versions of alternate realities are being peddled as so-called ‘truths.’

Ray Bradbury’s smart admonition about not being able to make people listen (especially those who choose to believe in alternate realities) is a good reminder. However, I prefer not to watch my world blow up around me before I say anything. There is something about Fahrenheit 451 (Amazon | Book Depository) that remains unforgettable to me. I hope more people would read its ‘truths’ set in a dystopian, post-apocalyptic universe that doesn’t seem too far off from the world we are presently living in.

What is your favourite Ray Bradbury novel?

Myra is a Teacher Educator and a registered clinical psychologist based in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates. Prior to moving to the Middle East, she lived for eleven years in Singapore serving as a teacher educator. She has edited five books on rediscovering children’s literature in Asia (with a focus on the Philippines, Malaysia, India, China, Japan) as part of the proceedings for the Asian Festival of Children’s Content where she served as the Chair of the Programme Committee for the Asian Children’s Writers and Illustrators Conference from 2011 until 2019. While she is an academic by day, she is a closet poet and a book hunter at heart. When she is not reading or writing about books or planning her next reads, she is hoping desperately to smash that shuttlecock to smithereens because Badminton Is Life (still looking for badminton courts here at UAE - suggestions are most welcome).

  1. I agree with you, I think we are living part of “Fahrenheit 451…” My eye caught your tag “Truth” and I had to stop by. I just wrote a poem on Trust which I think shares company with Truth. Thanks for the dip into Ray Bradbury. Provocative post, thanks Myra!
