I have been seeing this collection of poetry by Lucille Clifton shared by poet friends on social media. So while I was in the United States, I made sure to purchase my own copy of the book.

(Amazon | Book Depository)

I have been dipping in and out of this collection for awhile now, and this is one of the poems that called out to me, as it seems fitting for our current reading theme on survival and reinventing one’s self.

Here’s to feeling splendid in our new bones, Poetry Friday friends.

Myra is a Teacher Educator and a registered clinical psychologist based in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates. Prior to moving to the Middle East, she lived for eleven years in Singapore serving as a teacher educator. She has edited five books on rediscovering children’s literature in Asia (with a focus on the Philippines, Malaysia, India, China, Japan) as part of the proceedings for the Asian Festival of Children’s Content where she served as the Chair of the Programme Committee for the Asian Children’s Writers and Illustrators Conference from 2011 until 2019. While she is an academic by day, she is a closet poet and a book hunter at heart. When she is not reading or writing about books or planning her next reads, she is hoping desperately to smash that shuttlecock to smithereens because Badminton Is Life (still looking for badminton courts here at UAE - suggestions are most welcome).

  7. Myra, you chose the just right book for this week’s PF. “we will wear new bones again” sounds like a strike line for a golden shovel. Thanks. I may play around with that.

  8. Love the concept of having “new bones.” Much to ponder there. Also love the hopeful thinking forwardness of this poem. Brilliance from Ms. Clifton. Many thanks for joining us this week, Myra, and I do hope you find some badminton courts soon. Such a fun sport!
