[Book Quote Tuesday] Women Standing Up For Women

... Maya Angelou.

Myra here.

It is that time of the week again where we share a book quote that seemed particularly striking for us.

For the month of March, our book quote theme is: Woman

This March, we are sharing quotes about womanity: not as easy as it originally appeared to be. While there are hundreds of book quotes on women, a large majority are written by men as compiled or put together by Goodreads. I am trying to steer clear of male’s perceptions on women, but rather surfacing how women perceive women. Filtering through these quotes by women are also challenging, as I am trying to find non-White feminist perspectives, and again the quotation compilation of Goodreads is sorely lacking when it comes to highlighting the voices of women of colour. Regardless, I did manage to find a few gems, as can be noted here (and in the next four weeks to come). What better way to begin than with Maya Angelou’s mantra (Amazon | Book Depository) about a woman standing up for one’s self as a representation of standing up for all women.

Myra is a Teacher Educator and a registered clinical psychologist based in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates. Prior to moving to the Middle East, she lived for eleven years in Singapore serving as a teacher educator. She has edited five books on rediscovering children’s literature in Asia (with a focus on the Philippines, Malaysia, India, China, Japan) as part of the proceedings for the Asian Festival of Children’s Content where she served as the Chair of the Programme Committee for the Asian Children’s Writers and Illustrators Conference from 2011 until 2019. While she is an academic by day, she is a closet poet and a book hunter at heart. When she is not reading or writing about books or planning her next reads, she is hoping desperately to smash that shuttlecock to smithereens because Badminton Is Life (still looking for badminton courts here at UAE - suggestions are most welcome).
