“Do not allow your mind to be imprisoned by majority thinking. Remember that the limits of science are not the limits of imagination.” — Dr. Patricia Bath

From the dust jacket: As a girl coming of age during the Civil Rights Movement, Patricia Bath made it her mission to become a doctor. When obstacles like racism, poverty, and sexism threatened this goal, she persevered—brightening the world with a game-changing treatment for blindness!

I stumbled upon this book by accident and what a discovery! Author Julia Finley Mosca whipped up a treat for readers by telling the story of Dr. Patricia Bath through rhyming verses. Short verses are always great for read-aloud. I like that the book offered so many fascinating stories about Patricia’s life.

Patricia grew up in Harlem. Her big brother was very supportive of her. He played an important role in Patricia’s limitless imagination and he encouraged her to see beyond the boundaries. Growing up, Patricia’s favorite toy was a chemistry set, which cultivated her love for science and inspired her to become a doctor.

Patricia faced many obstacles, none of which stopped her from achieving her dreams. She was determined to succeed and, most importantly, help people. Growing up, Patricia received many awards and recognition, including Mademoiselle magazine’s Merit Award for a cancer research project. She became a co-founder of the American Institute for the Prevention of Blindness. In 1986, she completed the invention of the Laserphoto probe.

This was a fun book to read for people of all ages. If you would like to find out more about the Amazing Scientists series or are interested in activities and book-related printables, you may visit the Amazing Scientists website. Never stop learning!
