[Poetry Friday] I Am a Mirror, I Am Loved

I reflect the strengths Of my people And for that alone I am loved

Have you seen the poetry collection entitled I Am Loved? This anthology for kids features poems written by Nikki Giovanni that were hand selected by Newbery honoree Ashley Bryan (Freedom Over Me). Ashley Bryan’s watercolor illustrations create a visual masterpiece and bring to life Nikki Giovanni’s beautiful words.

Featured below is one of the poems from the book that sends a powerful message about love. Heidi of My Juicy Little Universe is hosting the Poetry Friday round-up this week!

I Am a Mirror

by Nikki Giovanni

I am a mirror

I reflect the grace
Of my mother
The tenacity
Of my grandmother
The patience
Of my grandfather
The sweat
Of my great-grandmother
The hope
Of my great-grandfather
The songs
Of my ancestors
The prayers
Of those on the auction block
The bravery
Of those in the middle passage

I reflect the strengths
Of my people
And for that alone
I am loved
