[Poetry Friday] “Evergreen” by Julia Hartwig

tree rooted in the sky... tree of illustion and tree of dream...

poetry friday

Fats here.

Three people at work asked me yesterday: Are you ready for Christmas? I’ve been ready since the first day of December. No celebration this weekend, though. Daniel’s sister is due to have her baby on Christmas Eve, so we will celebrate after little Kacie is born.

My Poetry Friday offering is an excerpt from Julia Hartwig’s poem, Evergreen, which was delivered to my Inbox by Knopf Poetry on December 13th. Poetry Friday round-up is hosted this week by Buffy at Buffy’s Blog!

Trees in a winter wonderland

Stay forever green tree of joyful existence
tree rooted in the sky
and tree drawing its sap from the earth
tree of illusion and tree of dream

stay with us and teach us endurance
royal from childhood on
eternally green
and eternally alive

— Julia Hartwig

Fats is the Assistant Manager for Circulation Services at the Wayne County Public Library in Wooster, Ohio. She considers herself a reader of all sorts, although she needs to work on her non-fiction reading. Fats likes a good mystery but is not too fond of thrillers. She takes book hoarding seriously and enjoys collecting bookmarks and tote bags. When she is not reading, Fats likes to shop pet apparel for her cat Penny (who absolutely loathes it).
