It’s been awhile since I have joined the Poetry Friday community, hosted this week by Laura Salas of Writing the World for Kids.
We are about to conclude our current reading theme: Into the Wild, and I thought it would be nice to share a bit of wild poetry.

I think I first chanced upon this book on Goodreads, and was immediately intrigued. When Iphigene shared that she got herself a copy, I thought that I might as well purchase it via Book Depository, and so here it is.
Apparently, this is part of a series, and this, as far as I know is the third book:
As luck would have it, I am only missing the first one (I know, right?). I suppose I had high expectations from this poetry collection. I have a feeling that Lang Leav fans would be over the moon with these, especially the fusion of photography and poetry.
The images are quite riveting – although way too random for my taste. If you are looking for some kind of connecting narrative, you might be as disappointed as I am. Or perhaps there is one, but I was just too obtuse to find it.
I especially loved the coloured photographs, and there is the seeming conversation initiated by the author with the reader – hence the title and the supposed name of the author. I believe the intention is to personalize the message so that any reader could get something from out of the random ruminations, the fragmented images, the feel-good inspirational vignettes and the poetic musings. It may simply have not found me at the right time. Regardless, it was a quick and enjoyable escape from the noise of the world. Given our current reading theme on wildness and rebels, I would like to share this poem with you, as I felt that it captures the essence of what we were celebrating over the past several weeks: The Defiance of the Different. Enjoy and have a great weekend!

I love the photographs paired with works, too. I’m sad it didn’t find you at the right moment. It certainly reaches toward the reader.

Sometimes when I read a book of “random” pieces, I might find one that touches me, and not the others. Perhaps that is what happened with you this time, Myra. The one you chose is a vibrant call to us to “change this place”, quite an inspiration!

This might be a collection to read in bits and pieces, rather than in one sitting. Sometimes you just have to be in the right time and place for a poem to connect with you – I know that I’ll read a poem one day and find it “meh”, only to pick it up again months later and be stunned by it. That’s the strange power of poetry, isn’t it? 🙂

Interesting. I love poems paired with images, but I’m not sure this approach would work for me, either. But as Jane said above, sometimes I’ll be turned off by a poem one day only to be fascinated by it another time. We sure are fickle. At least, I am. Thanks for sharing!

Sometimes you have to love a book for the one poem in it that speaks to you — Defiance of the Different is a gem!
