[Photo Journal] Natural History Museum in Helsinki Finland (Part 1 of 2)

photojournal

Myra here.

We are excited to share photographs every Tuesday from our recent or long-ago travels, or just everyday stuff that appealed to our mindful eye and sharp sensibilities as captured through fleeting images.

Natural History Museum in Helsinki Finland

It was in 2012 when my travel buddy and I went to Helsinki, Finland to present a paper at a conference. Naturally, geeks that we are, we couldn’t leave the city without going to the Natural History Museum. I actually featured a few photographs back in 2013, but only included a few of them. Hence, I am doing a two-part post to make up for that.

“The clearest way into the Universe is through a forest wilderness.”
― John Muir

“Some people talk to animals. Not many listen though. That’s the problem.”
― A.A. Milne, Winnie-the-Pooh

“People speak sometimes about the “bestial” cruelty of man, but that is terribly unjust and offensive to beasts, no animal could ever be so cruel as a man, so artfully, so artistically cruel.”
― Fyodor Dostoyevsky

“The animals of the world exist for their own reasons. They were not made for humans any more than black people were made for white, or women created for men.”
― Alice Walker

DSC02103

“I have from an early age abjured the use of meat, and the time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look upon the murder of men.”
― Leonardo da Vinci

“Until one has loved an animal, a part of one’s soul remains unawakened.”
― Anatole France

“I think I could turn and live with the animals, they are so placid and self contained;
I stand and look at them long and long.
They do not sweat and whine about their condition;
They do not lie awake in the dark and weep for their sins;
They do not make me sick discussing their duty to God;
Not one is dissatisfied-not one is demented with the mania of owning things;
Not one kneels to another, nor his kind that lived thousands of years ago;
Not one is responsible or industrious over the whole earth.”
― Walt Whitman

“If animals could speak, the dog would be a blundering outspoken fellow; but the cat would have the rare grace of never saying a word too much.”
― Mark Twain

“The reason birds can fly and we can’t is simply because they have perfect faith, for to have faith is to have wings.”
― J.M. Barrie, The Little White Bird

DSC02120

We’re mired in gravity, we’re earthbound. We’re ankle-deep in blood, and all because we ate the birds, we ate them a long time ago, when we still had the power to say no.
― Margaret Atwood

“To my mind, the life of a lamb is no less precious than that of a human being.”
― Mahatma Gandhi

“It would have been hard for Fat Charlie to say exactly when the accumulation of birds on the wire mesh moved from interesting to terrifying. It was somewhere in the first hundred or so, anyway. And it was in the way they didn’t coo, or caw, or trill, or song. They simply landed on the wire, and they watched him.”
― Neil Gaiman, Anansi Boys

“animals never worry about Heaven or Hell. neither do I. maybe that’s why we get along”
― Charles Bukowski, The Last Night of the Earth Poems

“There is no religion without love,
and people may talk as much as
they like about their religion, but
if it does not teach them to be good
and kind to man and beast,
it is all a sham.”
― Anna Sewell, Black Beauty

“Humanity’s true moral test, its fundamental test…consists of its attitude towards those who are at its mercy: animals.”
― Milan Kundera

DSC02155

“Man is the cruelest animal.”
― Friedrich Nietzsche
