[Photo Journal] Shipbuilding in Mahibadhoo Maldives

Myra here.

We are excited to share photographs every Tuesday from our recent or long-ago travels, or just everyday stuff that appealed to our mindful eye and sharp sensibilities as captured through fleeting images.

Shipbuilding in Mahibadhoo, Maldives

One of the things that we discovered while in Mahibadhoo is that the place thrives on shipbuilding as one of its many industries. During our island tour, with the fabulous Mazin of Amazing Noovilu Guesthouse as our guide, we get to see the craftsmanship and artistry of the people from the island.

We also had the good fortune of seeing the inside of this huge cruise ship that is a work in progress. Apparently, the making of this ship has already cost millions of dollars and would most likely be done in the next three years or so. Truth be told, it was just my husband who took the photographs as I was too much of a scaredy-cat to climb up the rickety steps to see what’s found inside.

I can’t wait to see what this would look like once it is finished.

Myra is a Teacher Educator and a registered clinical psychologist based in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates. Prior to moving to the Middle East, she lived for eleven years in Singapore serving as a teacher educator. She has edited five books on rediscovering children’s literature in Asia (with a focus on the Philippines, Malaysia, India, China, Japan) as part of the proceedings for the Asian Festival of Children’s Content where she served as the Chair of the Programme Committee for the Asian Children’s Writers and Illustrators Conference from 2011 until 2019. While she is an academic by day, she is a closet poet and a book hunter at heart. When she is not reading or writing about books or planning her next reads, she is hoping desperately to smash that shuttlecock to smithereens because Badminton Is Life (still looking for badminton courts here at UAE - suggestions are most welcome).
