Welcome GatheringReaders! I am excited to engage my book club participants with an online discussion about our Book of the Month this August: David Almond’s My Name Is Mina.

I only have a few questions here for you. Please feel free to just jump in and share your thoughts if you have read, or are currently reading the book, regardless of whether you’re in GatheringReaders or not. Do write your responses in the Comments Section.

  1. Have you finished reading the book yet? If yes, how did you find it? If no, which part are you in right now?

  2. What is the best thing you like about Mina?

  3. What are Mina’s thoughts about school? Why do you think she feels this way?

That’s it! Easy-peasy right! Looking forward to reading your responses. For GatheringReaders participants, see you all on Sunday, 24 August, 11-12 nn at the Jurong West Public Library.

If you’ve read the book and would like to be part of our discussion, please feel free to write your thoughts in the Comments section below.

Myra is a Teacher Educator and a registered clinical psychologist based in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates. Prior to moving to the Middle East, she lived for eleven years in Singapore serving as a teacher educator. She has edited five books on rediscovering children’s literature in Asia (with a focus on the Philippines, Malaysia, India, China, Japan) as part of the proceedings for the Asian Festival of Children’s Content where she served as the Chair of the Programme Committee for the Asian Children’s Writers and Illustrators Conference from 2011 until 2019. While she is an academic by day, she is a closet poet and a book hunter at heart. When she is not reading or writing about books or planning her next reads, she is hoping desperately to smash that shuttlecock to smithereens because Badminton Is Life (still looking for badminton courts here at UAE - suggestions are most welcome).

  2. 1. I have finished the book and it was weird… but fun! The different word fonts makes it cool!
    2. She has a mind- different from others. Who imagine themselves as birds?
    3. She HATES school. She has to follow what the teacher ask her to write and not write freely, or a composition- with blank pages or making up words. :):):):):):):)
