It is Tuesday once again. Time for Frizztext’s A-Z Photo Story Challenge. Letter this week is O and I am very happy to share photographs from Oldtown Bratislava.

O is for Oldtown Bratislava

You know as soon as you see this edifice that you have reached Oldtown in Bratislava.

The famous silver statue welcoming tourists to Oldtown. There are miniature figurines of this avuncular-looking debonair.

This is also another landmark figure in Oldtown. Our city tour guide noted that this man is forever stuck here as he likes looking up women’s skirts. I wonder if there’s any truth to that.1

The remote alleyways and arches do contribute to the quaint vibe of the place, with a touch of the sinister and the otherworldly. This is what I have in mind as I am reading about Oldtown in Book 4 of The Game of Thrones, A Feast for Crows. The book talks about cobblestones, arches, and deserted alleyways such as this one. Perfect fit.

There are a lot of restaurants, pubs, small coffee shops that are pretty reasonably-priced. During the weekend that we were there, we could hear a lot of drunken singing among men who are also watching the game on the television. If you want to find out what the people under the archway are looking at, see the photo below.

This functions as a unique compass that tells one how far Oldtown is from other cities around the globe.

Prior to moving to the Middle East, she lived for eleven years in Singapore serving as a teacher educator. She has edited five books on rediscovering children’s literature in Asia (with a focus on the Philippines, Malaysia, India, China, Japan) as part of the proceedings for the Asian Festival of Children’s Content where she served as the Chair of the Programme Committee for the Asian Children’s Writers and Illustrators Conference from 2011 until 2019. While she is an academic by day, she is a closet poet and a book hunter at heart. When she is not reading or writing about books or planning her next reads, she is hoping desperately to smash that shuttlecock to smithereens because Badminton Is Life (still looking for badminton courts here at UAE - suggestions are most welcome).

  1. about the sculpture, looking out of a whole: “this man is forever stuck here as he likes looking up women’s skirts…” – I suppose it is a World War 2 hero, resistance, fighting from under the boardwalk?

  2. Splendid photos, Myra – and especially the peeping up skirts man.
