[BHE 56] Loot from the AFCC (Singapore) and Little Lit (Manila) Festivals

BHE

It’s Sunday! Time for our Book Hunting Expedition post here in GatheringBooks where we share about the books that found us and spoke to us during the past weeks or so. I am very excited to share a few titles that I managed to snag from the two recent kidlit festivals that I attended this May – truly a vibrant month for children’s literature!

Three new picture books from the AFCC Publications. I am also very happy to share that I was among the panel of judges for this bilingual picture book competition: Purple by Wang Chu Qiao and illustrated by Cai Lixian; Adil’s Dining Table (Meja Makan Adil) by Rilla Melati Bahri and illustrated by Paula Pang; and Something Special written by good friend, the talented and indefatigable Evelyn Wong and illustrated by Guo Jingzhu.

Another book that I am excited to feature here in GatheringBooks: Water a picture book in verse written by Christopher Cheng and illustrated by our featured book artist, Susanna Goho-Quek.

Our Splash! Asia bibliography of water-themed books from and about Asia is here! With gorgeous illustrations to boot. I am very privileged to be part of the hardworking Committee that selected titles for this compilation.

I am also very happy to finally get my hands on our edited book: Beyond Folktales, Legends and Myths – A Rediscovery of Children’s Literature in Asia, the inaugural AFCC publication with chapter contributions from Leonard Marcus, Suzy Lee (keynote speakers from last year’s Festival), Jessie Wee (recipient of Singapore’s Lifetime Achievement Award in Children’s Literature), and prolific Australian author Ken Spillman.

The book also features AFCC’s country of focus last year: the Philippines, with chapter contributions from National Artist for Literature, Virgilio Almario; multi award-winning author Candy Gourlay, highly-talented and award-winning illustrator Isabel ‘Pepper’ Roxas who also did our book cover, layout, and design – so gorgeous; and a chapter contribution from social scientists Tuting Hernandez and myself.

From Lovely Authors David Seow, Sarah Mounsey, and Candy Gourlay

I am also very happy to receive author copies of these lovely picture books: Emma’s Elephant and If I were a Blue Kangaroo by David Seow and illustrated by Enrico Sallustio; Purple Paw Prints and Paw Prints on the Magic Sofa by the beautiful Sarah Mounsey and illustrated by Jade Fang.

Last year, Candy Gourlay gave me a novel as a present. This year, she is so generous to give me another book which she believes I will enjoy: A Boy and a Bear in a Boat by Dave Shelton.

I did not splurge much this year. I just bought one book from Bookaburra: Sita’s Ramayana by Samhita Arni and Moyna Chitrakar.

Last year, we featured Paolo Fabregas and his Filipino Heroes League. I am thrilled to be given a copy of the second book. Thanks, dear Paolo!

Since I rarely visit the Philippines, I thought that it would be as good time as any to purchase quite a few Filipino books. Here are the titles that caught my eye:

Kuting Magiting by Robert Magnuson, Zsa Zsa Zaturnah by Carlo Vergara, Trese Books 1-5 by Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldisimo, The Big Book of Witches by Antonio Tello and Illustrations by Fernando Falcone.

How about you, dear friends, what are the books that found their way to you this week?

  1. I missed this last week, Myra. What a lot of loot you found, and were given! They all look like good books! Hope you have room in your new home! I went to the Denver Library book sale last week & bought a bag full! Some were old favorites and some new! Much fun.
