Photo Journal/ A-Z Photo Challenge: H is for Heart

I always look forward to joining Frizztext’s A-Z Photo Challenge as it provides me with the perfect excuse to go over our huge database of photographs and sift through the ones I would be sharing with all of you. Letter this week is H and I have chosen the theme Heart. I have taken this picture when we were out hiking at Pulau Ubin here in Singapore.

H is for Heart

As I looked at this photograph, I felt that there was something truly special about it – poetic even, with the aching spaces within created by time and the lonely pebbles that surround this heart-shaped leaf, strewn about and forgotten on the ground. I invite you, dear friends, to share a story, a song, a poem that you feel would be perfect for such a picture. Meanwhile, here is a poem by Ellen Bass that I felt captured the photo’s gritty vibe.

The Thing Is

by Ellen Bass

to love life, to love it even

when you have no stomach for it

and everything you’ve held dear

crumbles like burnt paper in your hands,

your throat filled with the silt of it.

When grief sits with you, its tropical heat

thickening the air, heavy as water

more fit for gills than lungs;

when grief weights you like your own flesh

only more of it, an obesity of grief,

you think, How can a body withstand this?

Then you hold life like a face

between your palms, a plain face,

no charming smile, no violet eyes,

and you say, yes, I will take you

I will love you, again.

How about you, dear friends, what is your H photo for the week?

  1. I loved the photo — it was very poetic. Loved the space and texture behind the leaf. If you stare at the background for a few minutes images of people with expressions jump out at you as if they are all reaching for the heart. Great pick.
