BHE (14): 9 New Finds, 7 From All-Time Favorite Children’s Authors

Normally, when I go book-hunting, I don’t favor a particular author over another. Say, for example, I don’t just buy Shel Silverstein books or works of Neil Gaiman. The more unfamiliar sounding the book is, the better. Newly discovered authors are also great finds. Yesterday, however, was a different story altogether. I went to Barnes & Noble again so I could use the 30% discount coupon they sent me after signing up for their Kids Club (which actually got “revoked” yesterday because, according to the ladies at the counter, I don’t have any kids, so the club thingamajig wouldn’t apply. Tsk. I have to go back again another day to find out what really is the deal with their Kids Club. If you know anything about this, I’d be happy to hear feedbacks.)

Anyway, as I was saying, I bought 6 books yesterday, all of which turned out to be from my favorites! I was probably half-aware of this but I didn’t realize it ’til I got home to take pictures for today’s post. I can’t splurge on books at the moment because I’m trying to save money. (Yeah, right.) I would love to go to Book Off but it would be quite a drive. The other 3 books were bought a couple of weeks ago, all of which have stories that involve puzzles and mysteries. I thought of including them here also. Of these 9 books, two are from newly discovered authors. Ready to have a look?

Horten’s Miraculous Mechanisms (Magic, Mystery, and A Very Strange Adventure) by Lissa Evans – *New Find*

Halfway through the book. It’s good so far, and gives me the creeps at some parts (not in the horror sort of way, just how the msyteries are being unlocked).

A Whole Nother Story As told by (The One and Only) Dr Cuthbert Soup – *New Find*

This is a book in the likes of Lemony Snicket and Pseudonymous Bosch, methinks. I have yet to find out if his name is really Dr. Cuthbert Soup. There is a sequel to this which I have yet to purchase.

And now for all-time favorites…

The Mysterious Benedict Society: Mr. Benedict’s Book of Perplexing Puzzles, Elusive Enigmas, and Curious Conundrums by Trenton Lee Stewart

A companion book to The Mysterious Benedict Society series. If you like solving brain teasers, you’ll enjoy this book.

This Isn’t What It Looks Like by Pseudonymous Bosch

This is the fourth book in the series. I bought it thinking that I already have the third. Alas, I have to find a copy of the third book!

Jake and Lily by Jerry Spinelli

The latest book from the author of my beloved Stargirl.

Lulu and the Brontosaurus by Judith Viorst, illustrated by Lane Smith

Only one look at the cover and you know it has got to be the work of none other than Lane Smith!

Happy Pig Day! and Should I Share My Ice Cream? by Mo Willems

Two new Elephant & Piggie books! I gotta give it to the man. His books are extremely adorable! I plan to collect the entire Elephant & Piggie collection before purchasing the Knuffle Bunny, and the Pigeon series.

Artemis Fowl: The Last Guardian by Eoin Colfer

Okay, let me just say that my heart stopped and my jaw literally dropped when I saw this displayed on the shelf right before the entrance to the children’s section. For those of you who don’t know, this is the 8th book in the Artemis Fowl series. Rumor has it that this is the last installment but my heart refuses to believe it. I cannot wait to get started on this book. Then again, I kind of don’t want to read it yet because I don’t want Artemis Fowl II’s legacy to end. I love the series so much that I have copies of every single book, purchased at regular price or upon release! Oh the joy of book-hunting indeed!

Fats is the Assistant Manager for Circulation Services at the Wayne County Public Library in Wooster, Ohio. She considers herself a reader of all sorts, although she needs to work on her non-fiction reading. Fats likes a good mystery but is not too fond of thrillers. She takes book hoarding seriously and enjoys collecting bookmarks and tote bags. When she is not reading, Fats likes to shop pet apparel for her cat Penny (who absolutely loathes it).

  1. Oh my, Fats, what a lot of great books. I have heard of most, but the Elephant & Piggie books have touched me lately. They are so good. Others I really want to read are Jake & Lily and A Whole Nother Story. Fun to see all these!

  2. I LOVE Jake and Lily!

My 6-year old and I had a lot of fun reading Lulu and the Brontosaurus. Gotta love a book that can hold an adult’s attention as well as the kids’.
