Ministry of Education HeadQuarters Library Exhibition in Singapore

Two weeks ago, I was asked by the Ministry of Education Headquarters here in Singapore to conduct a short session for their Library Exhibition – about picture books that promote values-based education. I welcomed this talk as I always love talking about my favorite things in the world: books, books, books. Here are a few photos taken from the event. Many thanks to Suhailah for sending me the photographs.

Here I am talking about my favorite book of all times: Shaun Tan’s The Arrival

And I talk about Suzy Lee’s wordless picture books: her border trilogy and wordless art.

There are a few more picture books that I talked about – particularly picture book biographies as created by Kathleen Krull and Don Brown, multicultural books, wordless picture books, those which touch on immigration, and lovely books done by Ed Young and Allen Say. Hopefully in the next exhibition I can discuss poetry and more on nonfiction.

Thank you once again for the kind invitation and to everyone who attended my session.

Myra is a Teacher Educator and a registered clinical psychologist based in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates. Prior to moving to the Middle East, she lived for eleven years in Singapore serving as a teacher educator. She has edited five books on rediscovering children’s literature in Asia (with a focus on the Philippines, Malaysia, India, China, Japan) as part of the proceedings for the Asian Festival of Children’s Content where she served as the Chair of the Programme Committee for the Asian Children’s Writers and Illustrators Conference from 2011 until 2019. While she is an academic by day, she is a closet poet and a book hunter at heart. When she is not reading or writing about books or planning her next reads, she is hoping desperately to smash that shuttlecock to smithereens because Badminton Is Life (still looking for badminton courts here at UAE - suggestions are most welcome).
