Artie Bennett and Mike Moran’s POOPENDOUS! (The Inside Scoop on Every Type and Use of Poop!)

HANG ON A SEC! Before you decide to leave this page or minimize your window, take a moment to breathe and relax. For one thing, it may not look like it but this is a book review. Really. Also, POOPENDOUS! is serious business, so please give me chance and listen to what I have to say. Haha! Before I proceed, however, Myra, Iphigene, and I would like to send a million thank-you’s to the author himself, Artie Bennett, for graciously providing us with a copy of the book (and for trusting us and sharing with us these s-poop-tactular facts about such a delicate subject!).

Following his “tribute to the backside” as Myra so lightly (and brilliantly!) put in her review of The Butt Book, Artie Bennett returns with another rib-cracking, jaw-breaking, and wildly entertaining picture book called POOPENDOUS! The Inside Scoop on Every Type and Use of Poop! Illustrated by Mike Moran, this book combines witty verses and funny illustrations to share the “inside scoop” about an “icky-poo subject” that people would not bother talking about, let alone say the name.

If you’re having second thoughts about reading this book, then I’m telling you right now: READ THIS BOOK! If Dr. Seuss or Roald Dahl were to pick up this book, I’m quite certain that they would take delight in the title alone, and find the actual content even more delightful! With the aid of the knowledgeable Professor Pip Poopdeck, readers will learn about all kinds and uses of poop “from aardvarks to the humped zebu.”

One of the things I really liked about POOPENDOUS! is how it can be enjoyed on two different levels. On the one hand, it is a hilarious read, and readers will have so much fun reading the rhyming verses that are accompanied by the bright and zany cartoon sketches of Mike Moran. It’s definitely worth reading aloud! On the other hand, it has that ‘scientific’ feel to it in which children can actually learn something, like they would in an illustrated science book. So you see, POOPENDOUS! is more than your average laugh-out-loud picture book. I highly recommend that you share this book to children. It has the three E’s: Entertaining, Engaging, and Educational.

On a serious note, POOPENDOUS! reminded me of a scientific investigative project that I did in my sophomore year in high school. I forgot the actual title of the paper but my group mates and I demonstrated making fuel out of a water buffalo poop. It wasn’t quite anything we expected, but our demonstration using beakers, distillers, and bunsen burners was a success. Thus, I can attest to the fact that poop has its uses. Read this book and I guarantee that you’ll never look at poop the same way again. Hehe.

Artie Bennett is the inspired creator of The Butt Book, a “good-natured hymn of praise to rear ends in all their variety.” (Horn Book) Here, he once again combines fascinating facts with hilarious verse to offer kids an illuminating look at a topic that shouldn’t offend us and is, actually, quite… poopendous! Mr. Bennett and his wife live deep in the bowels of Brooklyn (pun fully intended). Visit him on the web at http://www.ArtieBennet.com.

Mike Moran is a School of Visual Arts graduate whose diverse list of clients includes Major League Baseball, and the Grammys. Fats is the Assistant Manager for Circulation Services at the Wayne County Public Library in Wooster, Ohio. She considers herself a reader of all sorts, although she needs to work on her non-fiction reading. Fats likes a good mystery but is not too fond of thrillers. She takes book hoarding seriously and enjoys collecting bookmarks and tote bags. When she is not reading, Fats likes to shop pet apparel for her cat Penny (who absolutely loathes it).
