This is our 17th time to join the Sunday meme In My Mailbox which is being hosted by The Story Siren. It’s a great way to keep track and document books we have read, bought, borrowed throughout the week.
My 9 year old daughter’s great buys
These are the books that my daughter bought for herself during the week.
I know, I know. I can’t seem to get her off the Goosebumps phase. While she enjoys Jerry Spinelli and the poems of Shel Silverstein, this seems to appeal to her sensibilities somewhat. Of course it doesn’t help that she buys this for 1 sgd/piece since these are gently-used books, so fine. Whatever floats your boat, girl.
These two books have my stamp of approval. She has the entire Wimpy Kid collection and she literally squealed in delight when she found another Do-it-Yourself book (this is the second one). She also has the entire set of Dork Diaries and it excited her to no end that there is also a DIY ‘How to Dork Your Diary’ special.
My Library Love
I vowed not to purchase any more new books for myself – at least for the next few weeks hehe – so here I am again with the books that I borrowed from the library.
I have to confess that I have succumbed to the 39 Clues Mania. I have my issues about the book, particularly the first one, as could be seen here – but I’ve always been a sucker for series, and admittedly the books improve considerably as more authors share their own distinct voices. I am particularly interested to read Linda Sue Park’s Storm Warning (Book 9) and Margaret Peterson Haddix’s Into the Gauntlet (Book 10). I have read rave reviews of Linda Sue Park’s writing so I am curious as to how she would weave her own voice into a seemingly-male-dominated voice in the series. It is also amazing (and not a minor feat either) how the authors were able to get young kids to engage in this book – either through the cards that go along with the books, or its interactive quality with its unique and ultra-cool website.
Sadly I am unable to find a copy of Syren by Angie Sage anywhere here in Singapore which frustrates me to no end. I have just recently bought Darke by Angie Sage and I am unable to read it yet because naturally I have to go through the series in order. I already have Books 1-4 (Magyk, Flyte, Physik, and Queste) and I have read them three years back I believe. Since I can’t possibly read Darke yet, I thought that this book which I borrowed from the library, Septimus Heap the Magykal Papers would remind me of the narrative and the characters and the setting and such.
Gathering Books 
My daughter loved Goosebumps at around that age too. Great for this time of year! I’m trying not to make too many purchases either. I need to get through the books I have. Good idea to make use of the library 🙂

Ooh the Goosebumps books! I haven’t seen those in a while! I loved those!
I really enjoyed the books by Angie Sage too, although i have only read the first three.

My younger brother LOVES The Diary of a Whimpy Kid series. He picks those ones up from the library all the time 🙂

Don’t sweat her love for Goosebumps. I read tons of them and the Fear Street books when I was younger and eventually moved on to other books. 🙂

Hi Alison, I actually regard it with quiet bemusement, ok sometimes not so quiet. Haha. She has over 20 books now, and she really seems to find them cool and fast-paced. 🙂
