Academic Nook Dahl and Magical Filipino Lit Meet the Storyteller poet's sanctum Reading Themes

Featured Storyteller, Academic and Poet for September and October

It gives me great pleasure to share with everyone the cast of characters for September and October here in GatheringBooks. Drum roll and rain dances, please.

Meet the Storyteller

For our Featured Author, we are privileged to have Ken Spillman, Australian YA novelist, award-winning author to share with us some of his thoughts about three of his books that we would be featuring here in GatheringBooks. We are doing a 4-in-1 Feature on Ken which we would be posting for Interview Wednesdays. Do watch out for that.

Academic Nook

I am heartened that I was able to arm-wrestle another kindred to write his thoughts about our Everything Dahl and Magical theme this September and October. Dr. Joseph Palis is currently a Teaching Assistant Professor and Advisor at the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies at the North Carolina State University. He is also a very dear friend with whom I share the glories of the full moon with.

I include two of our old photos to celebrate the time when we were young, invulnerable, and with nothing but poetry, starshine, and the taste of darkness in our veins.

A very unwilling Palis choked by my love.
My fellow dreamer. In one of those out-of-the-way artsy places in Cubao, Manila

Poet’s Sanctum

I am forever grateful to parallel universes that our website gives us this beautiful space to share the works of people we respect, admire, and would be constantly in awe of. It brings us great honor to feature the illustrious Professor Emeritus Gemino Abad for our Poet’s Sanctum in the next two months.

Photo taken from Prof. Abad's facebook page. =)

We would be featuring at least two of Prof Jimmy Abad’s works (Care of Light and the award-winning In Ordinary Timewhich won Italy’s Premio Feronia for foreign authors) for Poetry Friday. We are also excited to do a Q and A with him – definitely something that should not be missed.

Celebrate September and October here with us at GatheringBooks. Lots in store for everyone.

Myra is a Teacher Educator and a registered clinical psychologist based in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates. Prior to moving to the Middle East, she lived for eleven years in Singapore serving as a teacher educator. She has edited five books on rediscovering children’s literature in Asia (with a focus on the Philippines, Malaysia, India, China, Japan) as part of the proceedings for the Asian Festival of Children’s Content where she served as the Chair of the Programme Committee for the Asian Children’s Writers and Illustrators Conference from 2011 until 2019. While she is an academic by day, she is a closet poet and a book hunter at heart. When she is not reading or writing about books or planning her next reads, she is hoping desperately to smash that shuttlecock to smithereens because Badminton Is Life (still looking for badminton courts here at UAE - suggestions are most welcome).

  1. Myra – What a great cast for Sept/Oct. I met Ken at the 2011 AFCC and look forward to learning more about him (and his work) as well as your other guests! I’ll be checking in often!

    • Yay! Sounds wonderful, Corinne. AFCC truly provided a platform for us to meet kindreds and fellow book lovers and such talented authors/illustrators! Excited for this month (and the next) as well. 😉

  2. Can’t wait to read what’s in store! Thank you in advance, Myra. :0)
