This is my first time to post for IMM as hosted by Story Siren. I have reduced my book buying spree recently due to shelf space and financial difficulties. 🙂
However, while here at GB we endeavor to finish reading 365 books, I have my personal reading goal. The goal is to read at least 20 books from the 1001 Must Read Books. I’ve read 60 and want to add 20 this year.
In my university there’s a second hand book store stand. On one of those leisurely walk through the university I had time to look through the books they had and found that they had some of the titles I wanted to read. One of my closest friends introduced me to Michael Ondaatje when she sent me a copy of In the Skin of the Lion. From then I’ve read and featured Anil’s Ghost here at GB. So, I thought reading The English Patient is just right. I’ve been meaning to read McEwan for sometime now and I thought I’d start with the book that had a movie adaptation. Both these books are part of the 1001 Must Read List.
Kiran Desai is the daughter of Anita Desai, one of the author’s we’ve reviewed for our South Asian Challenge. The Inheritance of Loss isn’t part of the 1001 Must Read list, however it is a Man Booker Prize Winner. I enjoyed reading her mother’s work and I’ve began reading this book and she writes with so much eye for detail. I’ll be reviewing her work soon as part of the South Asian Challenge.
So those are my recent purchases and I have to say I won’t be buying any more soon as I’m cutting on my buying as its creating a dent in my pockets. Sigh.
I’ve heard so much of Daphne Du Maurier and been dying to read her work. However, it isn’t easy to find her works in the major book stores in the Philippines. I was happy to find it in that little second hand shop in school. I didn’t have to think twice in buying it.
Gathering Books 
That’s a great goal to read 20 books from the 1001 must read books. The English Patient is a good one. The Inheritance of Loss also sounds intriguing. Enjoy your new books!

Hopefully I do meet the goal. It seems that my free time (reading time) is slowly being eaten by other things. I’m glad to hear that the English patient is a good book. Looking forward to reading it. 🙂

Happy reading. I am working my way through all of the 1001 books before I die. I’ve given myself 50 years to read them for the first time or reread them.

I’m not 100% sure if I’ll ever get to read all those on the list. I might need 50 years too. But i’d like to read more from the list to open myself up to all sorts of books.

I love your goal! I think I’ve been unofficially doing that, but I haven’t really been trying.
I absolutely adored Rebecca… it’s one of my all time favourite books. My grandma recently gave me a really dusty, well-thumbed copy of it with all these pencilled notes in that she made when she read it. I think a re-read is in order.

Yes, i’ve heard so much about Rebecca that I’m excited to read it. I have no idea if i’ll ever go through the 1001 books given all the other books coming out every year, but I do hope to at least one work of each author on the list as some authors have multiple entries on the list.
