Book Hunting Expeditions

A Short Visit to Nelson Mandela State International School in Berlin Germany

One of the great things about traveling overseas, I find, is connecting with other Filipino academics, Pinoy workers, expatriates, immigrants working abroad. It was truly a pleasure to meet Lea Millares-Sylvester who is currently teaching English and Science at Nelson Mandela State International School in Berlin, Germany.

With Teacher Lea in Nelson Mandela State International School in Berlin

We belong to the same state university back during our undergraduate years (University of the Philippines in Diliman) and it’s beautiful to reminisce about our years in college. Upon her invitation, we visited her school in Berlin.

It was such a privilege touring the grounds, seeing the classrooms…

meeting some of the teachers and the students, and in my case visiting the library!

39 CLUES!!

Since I have taken quite a bit of pictures of the library, I’d just limit the photo uploading to books which are related to our Whodunit Theme for the month. =)

More Mystery Books!!! Yay!
Lemony Snicket's Series of Unfortunate Events
More Mystery titles - I can live here
We should do an Astrid Lindgren Special for our Bimonthly theme
I've heard a lot of good reviews about this book, anyone who's read this?
One of the more famous German authors

And my favorite sight: kids reading!

Enjoy your books, boys

Myra is a Teacher Educator and a registered clinical psychologist based in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates. Prior to moving to the Middle East, she lived for eleven years in Singapore serving as a teacher educator. She has edited five books on rediscovering children’s literature in Asia (with a focus on the Philippines, Malaysia, India, China, Japan) as part of the proceedings for the Asian Festival of Children’s Content where she served as the Chair of the Programme Committee for the Asian Children’s Writers and Illustrators Conference from 2011 until 2019. While she is an academic by day, she is a closet poet and a book hunter at heart. When she is not reading or writing about books or planning her next reads, she is hoping desperately to smash that shuttlecock to smithereens because Badminton Is Life (still looking for badminton courts here at UAE - suggestions are most welcome).

  1. Looks like the boys are enjoying some non-fiction. As I work in an international school I always like discovering more about other international schools. Mm English and Science is an unusual combination to teach. Glad you are enjoying your travels though I am assuming it is work related?

Hi Joanna! I was in Berlin to attend an International Arts Conference (Arts in Society) – this visit, though, at the Nelson Mandela State Intl School is an unexpectedly pleasant aside, having met a Berlin-based Filipino teacher while gallivanting around Berlin.

And yes, I am enjoying this sojourn in Eastern Europe. Presently in Prague. And I am unable to catch my breath (hyperventilate is the word I suppose) as I move from one sculpture to the next and the next. My killer boots however is a poor match for the cobblestones of Prague. =(

      Are you teaching in Nice?

      • I live in Nice and am guidance counselor at the International School of Monaco, down the road. I started as librarian there 10 years ago and set up our bilingual library.

Enjoy Prague, a dreamy city. A few Czech beers and you will be floating over the cobble streets 😉 Try and catch a concert if you can.

Sounds like challenging work (albeit rewarding, I am sure). Setting up a bilingual library seems like a daunting task too. Yup, I love Prague. It is my romance. But I hate myself for being weak when it comes to buying books. I discovered Peter Sis, a Prague native who is a picture book artist. I could resist the beer, the wine, the shawl but not the books and the cheese. I am a weak woman (tears hair out)!!!!

  2. Books are also my downfall.

I talk of Peter Sis in my present blog post as I got to do an interview with author Kate Banks, who knew Peter over 20 years ago as a struggling artist in Rome!
