GatheringBooks 1 Year Anniversary, 4 Public Schools, 1000 Books – and Griffin and Sabine Trilogy giveaway

One Year Anniversary of GatheringBooks this June-July 2011

We have been planning for our 1st Year Anniversary this coming June-July 2011 since November of 2010. I thought that it would be a wonderful idea to have an actual gathering of books to benefit a few public schools in the province of Samar.

I have a firsthand knowledge of how inadequate (or is it nonexistent) the libraries are in Samar since I have done a number of teacher training workshops when I visited last 2009 (see my reflections about that experience here). It pains my heart to see how dismal the situation is in a lot of remote provinces in the Philippines. Instead of remaining dismayed and disappointed though, we felt that the three of us could use our home, GatheringBooks as a vehicle through which we could do a bit of community service. We would like to call on anyone who would wish to donate a few used (or new) books – we would be deeply appreciative of books that you would be willing to share.

I will be visiting the Philippines this July and I am hoping that we would be able to give at least 250 books each to four public schools (1000 books in all) while my family and I are in Samar. Here are the target schools:

  1. Calbiga Elementary School, Contact Person: Natividad Gosto
  2. Macaalan Elementary School, Contact Person: Baby Lou Daclag
  3. San Luis Elementary School, Contact Person: Ignatia B. Flosa
  4. Sabang Elementary School, Contact Person: Mrs. Elsa Bacuetes
There are also several reasons why we chose Samar for the first year. One: it is the hometown of my mother, my husband, and my husband’s parents. Two: we try to visit Samar at least once every two/three years and rather than giving dole-outs which is the wont among ‘balikbayans’ in the Philippines, we choose to give something more productive, and something which we believe would be treasured and valued by and be of benefit to the children. Three: Western Samar is considered to be one of the poorest provinces in the Philippines.
We have created a table of books that we are hoping to receive as donations for this Project:
Schools Sabang Elementary School – Elsa Bacuetes San Luis Elementary School – Ignatia B. Flosa Calbiga Elementary School – Natividad Gosto Macaalan Elementary School – Baby Lou Daclag
Reading/ Language related textbooks /worksheets (P1-P6)
Math textbooks (P1-P6)
Science textbooks (P1-P6)
Teacher Resources/ Teaching Materials/ Dictionary
Reference Materials/ Encyclopedia/ Educational Magazines
Children’s Books/ Picture Books/ Classics
Chapter Books/ YA fiction
Mary would also be creating a page in our mainsite where we shall provide a continual update of donations we received and where it came from. This is to ensure that there is transparency and accountability as we do this little project of ours.
As of the moment, we have received 66 books from Professor Libby Cohen when she discovered that we are doing this for our 1st Year Anniversary.
Many thanks Libby and Les for your generous donation
More books! From Libby and Les Cohen
Thanks again to Libby and Les
We are hoping that we get at least a decent representation across the categories that we have come up with for all four public schools. We are also hoping for cash donations so we can ship the donated books to the province.

Further News Flash for our One Year Anniversary – More Book Giveaways to BookBlogger Friends

In addition to this, we are also giving away the Griffin and Sabine Trilogy and The Gryphon for our One Year Anniversary to book bloggers who would share a blogpost (book review) about star-crossed lovers as a comment in this post.

To answer your unasked question, we are splitting the four books (awww, I know) across four individuals/winners – we are throwing them away to the wind – and maybe you can all find each other to put the pieces together. These four books for giveaway are courtesy of Evermore Bookstore. So if you wish to have a chance to receive our luscious giveaway (open to all), share your link as a comment on this announcement post until 30 June 2011 and we shall announce the winners by the first week of July. Mary, Fats and Myself would choose our winners, while the fourth one would be chosen at random.

It’s going to be a fun fun first year for all of us! =)

Myra is a Teacher Educator and a registered clinical psychologist based in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates. Prior to moving to the Middle East, she lived for eleven years in Singapore serving as a teacher educator. She has edited five books on rediscovering children’s literature in Asia (with a focus on the Philippines, Malaysia, India, China, Japan) as part of the proceedings for the Asian Festival of Children’s Content where she served as the Chair of the Programme Committee for the Asian Children’s Writers and Illustrators Conference from 2011 until 2019. While she is an academic by day, she is a closet poet and a book hunter at heart. Thanks Maricar! We are hoping that we could do this annually too. =) And we can reach out to more disadvantaged public schools in various areas in the Philippines. =)

  8. Tete Haha

Hi! I’m interested in helping out. We have several children’s books here at home. We’re also from Samar (Borongan). How do I help/give? I’m staying in Manila.

    • Hi Tete, thank you for this. Please contact Mary Daradar, who happens to be based in Manila so you can make arrangements: gatheringbooks2009@gmail.com – but if you’re Karen’s friend, you can hand it over to her before 17 June 2011 since we’d be sending the books over by the 18th. Thanks again!
