Reading Themes When Words are Not Enough

Launch of our March-April Bimonthly Theme: When Words are not Enough, a Wordless Picture Book Special

It was September of last year when we began the launch of our GatheringBooks theme with our Picture Books that Sing which feature amazing books and art work based on Joni Mitchell’s, Bob Dylan, Ella Fitzgerald, and Billie Holiday’s songs (among others).

From there we had this flash of insight that it would be great to have ongoing themes to organize our featured books for the month. Given our insanely hectic schedule, we settled on Bimonthly themes to ease the burden of having to cram in all the books in just one month and give them some space to breathe and our readers to also catch their breath as they struggle to keep up with our posts.

For March-April, we are doing something that may be uncommon to most book bloggers – we would be blogging about books without words. “When Words are not Enough – A Wordless Picture Book Special.”

Mary has created this beautiful poster for our March-April launch and it is just amazing. I thought I knew about Photoshop – I thought wrong.

We would most definitely be featuring quite a number of David Wiesner and Shaun Tan’s books this March-April. If you have any recommendations that you believe would fall right along this theme, please let us know, and we’d search for it in our libraries and bookstores.

We realized just how hectic our January-February was, we plan to take it a little bit easy this March and April and blog about beautiful artwork through picture books. Hopefully this would also give us some space to update some of our reading challenges which have been posted, announced, and forgotten completely. We would also be posting announcements about our upcoming One Year Anniversary this June-July and the Launching of our Brand New Spankin’ website which Francis and Mary are working hard to complete and finish. Watch out for the unveiling of our main site.

Myra is a Teacher Educator and a registered clinical psychologist based in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates. Prior to moving to the Middle East, she lived for eleven years in Singapore serving as a teacher educator. She has edited five books on rediscovering children’s literature in Asia (with a focus on the Philippines, Malaysia, India, China, Japan) as part of the proceedings for the Asian Festival of Children’s Content where she served as the Chair of the Programme Committee for the Asian Children’s Writers and Illustrators Conference from 2011 until 2019. While she is an academic by day, she is a closet poet and a book hunter at heart. When she is not reading or writing about books or planning her next reads, she is hoping desperately to smash that shuttlecock to smithereens because Badminton Is Life (still looking for badminton courts here at UAE - suggestions are most welcome).
