BHE (32): Goodwill During the Holiday Season

BHE

Literally. Today’s BHE post features books I looted from Goodwill by my place. They’re not the cheapest compared to Book Off but a thrift store is a thrift store. Books are definitely sold a lot less than their original prices. Hope you find these titles to your liking.

Merry Christmas everyone! =)

Stargirl | Milkweed

When Myra saw the picture I posted above, she immediately commented on Stargirl. “Don’t you have that already?” I do. But I left my copy in the Philippines. I wanted to re-read it as well as Love, Stargirl so I bought another copy. Spending a couple of dollars wasn’t too bad. I almost bought a paperback copy of Milkweed. Thank God I passed on it because I got a hardcover for a cheaper price than the paperback! Yay me!

Love for Banana Yoshimoto

Kitchen | N.P.

Iphigene was the one who got me into Banana Yoshimoto. I’ve only read Kitchen, so imagine how happy I was when I also saw N.P. on the shelf. A few days before I went to Goodwill, I told Iphigene that I hoped to find a Banana Yoshimoto book before the year ends. Santa must have heard me. These were the only Banana Yoshimoto books that Goodwill had. Woohoo!

Love for Mark Haddon and Umberto Eco

A Spot of Bother | The Name of the Rose

I liked Mark Haddon’s A Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, but I haven’t read any of his books since. (This was during college days!) Yay for A Spot of Bother. And of course Umberto Eco’s The Name of the Rose is a classic. What’s your favorite Umberto Eco book?

Love for Trilogies

The Wind Singer | Slaves of the Mastery | Firesong
from The Wind on Fire trilogy by William Nicholson

I snagged the whole set from the shelf. Hurrah! It’s rare that all books in the series are on a thrift store set. At least one book is almost always missing. This is fun, fun, fun. Any of you familiar with or heard of this series? I’d like to hear your thoughts on it!

Love for Love Itself

The Frog King by Adam Davies | Love is a Mix Tape by Rob Sheffield

I like reading light and funny love stories that are not along the lines of teen fiction. Please. Haha! Anyway, I hope these are good reads! I hope they fill my heart with so much love the way Sarah Tregay’s Love & Leftovers did.

Love for Compilations

Rose, Poems by Li-Young Lee | The Prophet of Zongo Street by Mohammed Naseehu Ali |
Happily Ever After, Edited by John Klima

I have featured Li-Young Lee on Poetry Friday before, during our theme on Immigration. Rose is a collection of poems written about, well, roses and flowers in general. Ali’s book, on the other hand, is a collection of “rich African storytelling that mixes myth with modernity.” The book had me at ‘myth.’ As for Happily Ever After, aside from it being a collection of fractured fairy tales, I bought it because it features one of Neil Gaiman’s works. Need I say more? Hehe.

FEATURED BOOK OF THE DAY

Love for Art Spiegelman

MAUS II

It was nearly three months ago when I bought my copy of MAUS I as featured in BHE (20). Imagine my surprise (and excitement, with my heart going thumpthumpthump) when I saw MAUS II in the graphic novel section of Goodwill. OH. MY. GAWD. While I haven’t read any of them, I’m still one happy camper. Yay for the spirit of Christmas!
