Photo Journal/ Weekly Photo Challenge: Green

This week’s theme for the photo challenge as hosted by The Daily Post at WordPress is Green – one of my favorite colors. Here are some of the photographs I have taken while I was on a ‘Swamp Tour’ – Cajun Style of course – in New Orleans.

Spanish Moss, Duckweed, Green

“Where there is a woman there is magic. If there is a moon falling from her mouth, she is a woman who knows her magic, who can share or not share her powers. A woman with a moon falling from her mouth, roses between her legs and tiaras of Spanish moss, this woman is a consort of the spirits.” ― Ntozake ShangeSassafrass, Cypress and Indigo

Supposedly a famous tree – where Anne Rice’s Lestat died.

A tree says: My strength is trust. I know nothing about my fathers, I know nothing about the thousand children that every year spring out of me. I live out the secret of my seed to the very end, and I care for nothing else. I trust that God is in me. I trust that my labor is holy. Out of this trust I live. – Herman Hesse

“At night I dream that you and I are two plants
that grew together, roots entwined,
and that you know the earth and the rain like my mouth,
since we are made of earth and rain.”
― Pablo Neruda, Regalo De Un Poeta/ Gift Of A Poet

“Look: the trees exist; the houses
we dwell in stand there stalwartly.
Only we
pass by it all, like a rush of air.
And everything conspires to keep quiet
about us,
half out of shame perhaps, half out of
some secret hope.”
― Rainer Maria RilkeDuino Elegies

Spanish moss hanging from trees – if this does not inspire you to write gothic novels, I don’t know what will.

“One impulse from a vernal wood
May teach you more of man,
Of moral evil and of good,
Than all the ages can.”
― William Wordsworth

Myra is a Teacher Educator and a registered clinical psychologist based in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates. Prior to moving to the Middle East, she lived for eleven years in Singapore serving as a teacher educator. She has edited five books on rediscovering children’s literature in Asia (with a focus on the Philippines, Malaysia, India, China, Japan) as part of the proceedings for the Asian Festival of Children’s Content where she served as the Chair of the Programme Committee for the Asian Children’s Writers and Illustrators Conference from 2011 until 2019. While she is an academic by day, she is a closet poet and a book hunter at heart. When she is not reading or writing about books or planning her next reads, she is hoping desperately to smash that shuttlecock to smithereens because Badminton Is Life (still looking for badminton courts here at UAE - suggestions are most welcome).

  1. as a German I’m surprised to find here Hermann Hesse and Rainer Maria Rilke – but my favorite poem is the one written by Neruda!
