In My Mailbox (42): The Science Fiction and Hardcore Fantasy Edition

Happy Easter Everyone!

This marks our 42nd post for The Story Siren’s In My Mailbox, a Sunday meme that allows you to geekily feature books that you’ve earned, gained, obtained through dubious means for the past week (or so). This week’s edition is even geekier than usual as I am trying my hand at more hardcore science fiction.

Some of these books were likewise given to me during my birthday month by the best enabler of all times, my dearest husband; the others I bought on sale from Bras Basah here in Singapore. So on to the books.

A Game of Thrones – A Bit of Lovin’ Goes to George R R Martin

Again, my book hunting was rewarded when I discovered these two books by George R. R. Martin (2 books for 5 sgd): A Storm of Swords and Fevre Dream. My husband and I were riveted by the HBO Series, A Game of Thrones (couldn’t wait for the next season) – and so I knew I had to buy Book 3 from the Series.

As a belated birthday gift, my husband decided to just purchase the entire set for me from Kinokuniya: A Game of Thrones, A Feast for Crows, A Clash of Kings, and A Dance with Dragons. Now to find the time to read them all.

More Sci Fi and Fantasy Love

I also discovered a few Orson Scott Card books at 2 sgd: Alvin the Journeyman and Prentice Alvin. Kender, Gully Dwarves and Gnomes is an anthology of fantasy stories by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman. Since Dragonlance came highly recommended by someone I highly respect when it comes to book tastes, I thought of giving it a try, and it’s not bad for 2 sgd.

And what luck, I found the Collector’s Edition of Dragonlance Chronicles: Dragons of Autumn Twilight, Dragons of Winter Night, Dragons of Spring Dawning by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman for only 2.50 sgd (2 books for 5 sgd, 1 book for 2.90). Unbelievable price indeed!

Now these lovelies are still on sale, but a tad more expensive: 3 books for 10 sgd, 1 book for 4 sgd. Still not bad. Finding J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Silmarillion – The Myths and Legends of Middle Earth was such a high, alongside Cynthia Voigt’s The Wings of a Falcon.

I’ve always been a huge Clive Barker fan: from his Abarat series to Galilee to Weaveworld. While I already have copies of Imajica and Imajica Volume II: The Reconciliation, I remembered a time when I was searching oh so desperately for these books and I could not find them. I have a feeling they’re out of print. I bought them for possible presents to special friends – it’s 3 books for 10 sgd. Can’t go wrong with that. 🙂

Book Sale at Singapore Expo

For those of you who are in Singapore and may not know it yet, there’s an ongoing book sale at the Singapore Expo until today. While it is not as dirt-cheap as the books in Bras Basah, these are brand new novels whose price have been cut down at 50% off – hence some of the books are still worth 9 sgd. I found a few pretty good titles though as you can see below.

Finally! I found Book 4 of Tales from the Sinister City series: F. E. Higgins’ The Lunatic’s Curse which I have been looking for since I have Books 1-3. Incendiary by Chris Cleave has also been on my wish list since I have Little Bee in my bookshelf waiting to be read.

These are my daughter’s loot from the Book Sale: Terror Time Toys by Jamie Rix, Book 5 of the Grizzly Tales. Her godmother from New Zealand gave her Books 1 and 2 of the Grizzly Tales and she liked it. She is also into Hank Zipzer, so she bought I got a D in Salami and The Zippity Zinger by Henry Winkler and Lin Oliver.

While I’ve read the entire Hunger Games Series (as borrowed from our community libraries), I only have a personal copy of Books 1 and 2, and so I had to buy Mockingjay as well by Suzanne Collins since my ten year old daughter is deeply into the series (she just cried heart-rending tears after reading about Rue’s death in Book One yesterday). I have also closely followed and enjoyed the TV series The Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follett with my husband and I thought that I might as well read the book.

How about you? What’s in your mailbox this week?

    • I’ve seen the TV series of Pillars of the Earth and it was really good, so I’m excited to read it. Yup, my daughter is stretching out her reading of The Hunger Games and having a few light reading in between chapters. She claims the narrative is too intense for her to read at one go. 🙂

    • Hi there, I am hoping that the books would be even more riveting than the series (if that is at all possible). Really excited to read through them and drown in a fantasy world. 🙂

  6. I’ve heard such great things about the A Game of Thrones series! I’ve been wanting to watch it, but I’d really like to read the books (or at least book one) first! These are definitely on my Summer Reading List 🙂

I also love Lord of the Rings! I haven’t read The Silmarillion, but I bet it’s amazing (a little biased, of course, for loving everything J.R.R Tolkien touched).

    Happy reading!!

  12. Fantastic SciFi/Fantasy haul indeed!! I’m so excited to see people picking up the entire Song of Ice and Fire series because it is sooooooo good. And yes, the HBO adaptation is wonderful. I haven’t read Fevre Dream yet, but I really want to! Enjoy all of your goodies. =)

    • Hello there Heidi, I assume you’ve read the entire series? I know how book clubs recently seem to zero in on the Song of Ice and Fire series for the precise reason that it is simply riveting and fascinating with all these characters. I had hoped to read the series before Season 2 comes out, but no such luck. 🙂

  19. So my jaw dropped at the Game of thrones goodies you got, then I *gasped* at Incendiary because I LOVED little bee. Then I just about fainted when I saw the Simarillion. You’re my book sister from a different book mother! 😀

Thanks for swinging by my blog! I love your haul. I have not read the George Martin Series yet. I’ve just been watching the HBO series and I absolutely love it. I plan to start reading the books over the summer when I have more than enough time on my hands. I loved the Hunger series. I read it with my middle school book club last year, however MockingJay was my least favorite of the three. Once you read it, I’d like to know what you think of it.

    Happy Reading!

    • Hello there Mo, I also enjoyed your loot this week. I love the description book sister from a different book mother! That’s nice, hehe. I am glad you enjoyed Little Bee, I have it in my bookshelves for the longest time but have not had the chance to read it yet. Incendiary came as a nice surprise, didn’t expect to find it during the book sale.

Regarding Mockingjay, I’ve actually read the entire trilogy last year, and I know about the mixed reviews of people about the third installment to the series. Surprisingly, I actually enjoyed it, I thought that the events all led up to that culminating point where people naturally had to make a stand – I also liked the philosophical and socio-political issues that were raised such that you turn into that which you hate the most. I particularly liked those twists and the moral dilemmas the book managed to raise. 🙂

Psst, I think the White Cat books would be too ‘adult’ for your 10 year old to read.. it isn’t children’s books 🙂 But it is YA. Anyway, you decide that 😀

    Like

    • Hi there! Thanks for informing me about White Cat, wouldn’t want to give her anything too ‘adult’ as yet, so I’m glad you have clued me in. She loved Holly Black’s The Good Neighbors although it did have a few romantic scenes, it was mostly tolerable, I thought. I didn’t realize the White Cat books were steamier. Hehe. Have to read more of her works. 🙂

  25. I haven’t watched A Game of Thrones yet but whenever I see graphics of it, I’m astounded. It looks amazing and everyone I know seems to love it! I might watch the series before picking up the books, but even that might have to wait a little longer. 🙂 I mean, I passed by Fully Booked earlier and saw all the GoT books… or, well, all of them except for the first. That’s got to mean something, right? Haha!

Anyway, I haven’t heard of a lot of books in your IMM (besides The Silmarillion, The Pillars of the Earth, and, of course, Mockingjay), but I hope you’ll enjoy all of them! If there’s anything you particularly recommend, please tell me! Have a great week! 🙂

    • Hi Kathe, thanks for dropping by. The GoT series is awe-inspiring and huge in its production and vision. I haven’t read the books yet so I’m not sure how closely it managed to follow the books, but I am definitely looking forward to reading the originals.

I am glad though that this post has led you to quite a few other books that you haven’t heard of yet. 🙂
