Two weeks back, we had our version of Black Friday/Saturday here in Singapore with Bras Basah Complex holding a delectable spread of book bargains – even more than its usual book sales. Naturally, I just had to get my fill of booksbooksbooks. IMM as hosted by Kristi from The Story Siren is truly a great way to feature books we have bought, received, borrowed, downloaded. Here are my finds.
Daughter’s Goosebumps Mania
If you had been following our recent IMM posts, you would have known how positively addicted my nine year old is to the Goosebumps Series. Here are a few of her 1 sgd finds from Bras Basah Complex – all from R. L. Stine, of course: The Curse of the Mummy’s Tomb, Don’t Go to Sleep, The Cuckoo Clock of Doom, and Invasion of the Body Squeezers, Part 1 (oh dear, there’s a part two?)
Adult Literature at 2.90 is not bad.
Yes! I was able to get these two lovely books for 2.90 sgd (1.45 a piece). I have a feeling I’d be able to feature these two books for March 2012 when we have our Women’s Wiles and Girl Power bimonthly theme. This is my first Simone de Beauvoir – The Woman Destroyed. I have a few Atwood books in my shelf and this seems like a wonderful addition: Oryx and Crake.
I have always been in love with Salman Rushdie and I am glad that I finally chanced upon my very own copy of Haroun and the Sea of Stories. I recalled flipping through this same book roughly 13 years ago and falling deeply for the name Rashid Khalifa. I never got to finish this book, I am glad to have my own copy now.
I am taking a chance with Louis de Bernieres’ The Troublesome offspring of Cardinal Guzman. First time I’ve heard of this author, but yes, the cover has intrigued me as well as the synopsis found at the back – how can one not love a novel of supposedly “prodigious imagination.” I shall prepare to be enchanted, then.
YA Literature
Now this book is NOT on sale at 10 sgd – but I’ve been on the lookout for Syren by Angie Sage for the loooongest time now, and I actually thought we have run out of copies here in the whole of Singapore, I’m just glad that FINALLY my Septimus Heap series is complete!
I honestly have two minds about the series Artemis Fowl (despite the fact that I think I have completed all titles), but I just couldn’t resist Eoin Colfer’s The Wish List at 2.90 along with Spirit Walker by Michelle Paver – which I already apparently own! Oh well, one more book to give away and share then! 🙂
Which reminds me, does anyone know of an app or a program that I could download where I can keep track of books that I already own – without me having to go online? Shelfari seems like a good choice but I’d like an app or a program that I can easily check in my iPhone without necessarily needing internet access – if you have recommendations, I’d be glad to take note of them.
Yes, I collect notebooks – particularly those without lines in them. I like this one with thick black pages. The purple ones are unlined. Now to find me a nice glittery silver or gold pen to write on my black notebook.
My Delectable Find
This one deserves its own special place – my favorite IKEA chair. My very own copy of Brian Selznick’s The Invention of Hugo Cabret for 14.90 sgd. Not bad at all!
Gathering Books 
Myra, you are someone after my own heart! I love reading about your books! I went Christmas shopping at my favorite bookstore today, the Tattered Cover in Denver, CO and got to spend a wonderful hour or so browsing and buying. So, I bought: a biography of Pearl Buck (Spurling) for a sister-in-law who loves Pearl Buck’s books; Owl At Home, by Arnold Lobel for a nephew’s young son; The Mitten by Jan Brett, to take immediately to my 2 1/2 year old granddaughter; a Lego Ideas book for my 10 year old grandson; and for me: picture books-Born & Bred In The Great Depression, by Jonah Winter and Kimberly Bulcken Roo, The Nativity by Julie Vivas, and The Man Who Invented Christmas, about Dickens, by Les Standiford. I always try to get a Christmas tale for myself during the holidays. BTW-I’d love to have found the Atwood. It’s supposed to be very good.

Hi Linda! I’m so glad that these books resonated with you as well. Always great to find a kindred. I’m interested about some of the books you managed to buy, particularly the biography of Pearl Buck. Several months ago, I was able to find Madeleine L’engle’s A Circle of Quiet – which is part of her memoir – I have a feeling you’d enjoy this one as well. I lovelove the Lobels – one of my favorites is On Market Street. I’ve been seeing The Man who Invented Christmas in our library. I’d love to hear your thoughts about that book – I also thought that some of your other picture books would be perfect as well for Nonfiction Monday! 🙂

I’ve read the first four books in the Septimus Heap series – now I have books 5 and 6. Problem is – I don’t think I remember books 1-4 anymore. Oh dear. Might have to re-read.

Goosebumps!! I used to love reading those when I was younger. I went through a major horror book obsession in primary school haha. So glad to hear your 9 year old is hooked on them! Brings back memories 🙂

I suppose I truly have no cause for complaint – I was also a huge horror book fan when I was younger – I devoured Stephen King and Clive Barker. 🙂 And Dean Koontz too when I was in the university, if I recall correctly. And of course Edgar Allan Poe.

I’ve always been curious about the Septimus Heap books and oh, how looking at those Goosebumps books takes me back! I used to own them all – about 50 or 60 at the time and they were the foundation of my love for all things supernatural!

Hahaha, I remember the Goosebumps books! But I think the Atwood and de Beauvoir own this pile. I did a critical analysis of The Giver in grad school using de Beauvoir and others as lens. Ahhhh. I miss school! Happy reading!
